When to go to the Romanian coast — a 2026 seasonal guide

The question every Romanian asks before a holiday: when is the best time to go to the coast? The answer depends a lot on what you're after — scorching sun and parties, a warm sea for the kids, or quiet beaches and gentler prices. The Black Sea has a short season, but a surprisingly varied one. Here's the complete guide, month by month.

June: the gentle start of the season

June is the month for those who flee the crowds. The beaches of Mamaia, Eforie Nord or Olimp are still relaxed, the terraces are only just waking up, and accommodation prices are friendlier than at the peak of the season.

The only trade-off: the water temperature. In early June, the sea can still be chilly (18–21°C), because the Black Sea warms up slowly. Towards the end of the month it becomes comfortable.

Ideal for: couples, people who want peace and quiet, long walks on the beach.

July–August: peak season

These are the classic seaside months. The sea reaches 23–26°C, perfect for swimming, and the resorts buzz with life.

The downside is obvious: maximum crowds, packed beaches and top-tier prices. If you're going in August, book your accommodation many months ahead.

Ideal for: families with children, young people, anyone who wants a lively atmosphere.

September: the connoisseurs' secret

Many coastal veterans swear by September. The sea is still warm (it has stored up the summer's heat), the air turns milder, and the crowds visibly thin out after 1 September, when school starts.

Eforie Sud, Mangalia or Venus become oases of calm, and prices begin to drop. It's the ideal month for a romantic holiday or for treatments at Techirghiol.

Ideal for: couples, retirees, lovers of peace and spa treatments.

The off-season: the coast in a different light

The coast doesn't die in winter. In the off-season (October–May), you discover another face of the Black Sea — wild, contemplative, photogenic.

  • Constanța stays alive all year, with its renovated Cazino, the Delfinariu and its museums.
  • Vama Veche has a special charm in winter, deserted and dramatic.
  • Techirghiol works as a wellness destination year-round, thanks to its therapeutic mud and the lake's salty water.

A quick seasonal table

  • June: cool sea, quiet, good prices
  • July: warm sea, growing crowds
  • August: warm sea, absolute peak season
  • September: sea still warm, quiet, falling prices
  • October–May: off-season, city break in Constanța, wellness at Techirghiol

In closing

If you want the warmest sea, choose the second half of July or August. If you want peace and better prices without giving up the warm water, September is the wise choice. And if you're curious to see the coast in a different light, an off-season getaway to Constanța or Vama Veche will completely change your perspective.
