Eforie Sud — the complete guide to a peaceful holiday

Between the bustle of Constanța and the buzz of the southern resorts hides a resort that has kept its discreet elegance of old. Eforie Sud doesn't shout for attention, but it rewards generously those who choose it for a peaceful holiday, with a wide beach, shady parks and the air of a genteel resort from another era.

If its big sister, Eforie Nord, is known for its spa treatments and lively scene, Eforie Sud remains the refuge of families and couples seeking authentic relaxation, far from the crowds.

A resort with history

Eforie Sud was once called Carmen Sylva, after the literary pen name of Queen Elisabeta of Romania. That heritage can still be felt today in the charming villas, the lime-lined lanes and Belona Park, which slopes gently down to the sea. An evening stroll along the quiet streets, with the scent of acacia and salt in the air, is a pleasure in itself.

The beaches and the water

Eforie Sud's beach is one of its great assets: wide, with fine golden sand, and far less crowded than those in the north of the coast.

  • The fine sand and shallow water make it ideal for children.
  • Belona Beach, next to techirghiol-techirghiol" class="lo-autolink">Lacul Techirghiol, is renowned for its scenery.
  • There are developed areas as well as quieter stretches for those who want privacy.

A rare advantage: the proximity of Lacul Techirghiol, whose sapropelic mud has drawn health-seeking visitors for over a century.

Treatments and health

Though more discreet than Eforie Nord, the resort enjoys the same natural treasure: the therapeutic mud of Techirghiol. Many villas and guesthouses offer access to treatments, and the nearby mud baths are a tradition worth trying at least once.

What to do for a whole day

  • In the morning, the beach and a swim in the sea.
  • At lunch, fresh fish on a terrace in the centre.
  • In the afternoon, a walk in Belona Park or a dip in the salt lake.
  • In the evening, an outing to Constanța to see the Cazinoul, the Delfinariul or the Acvariul.

The short distances make the resort an excellent base. In under an hour you reach Mangalia, the Callatis fortress or the north of the coast at Mamaia.

Cuisine

The terraces of Eforie Sud serve authentic Dobrujan cuisine: grilled mackerel, carp saramură, Dobrujan pies and mussels. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious, just like the resort itself.

Who it suits

Families with small children (a safe beach and quiet), couples wanting a romantic getaway, seniors seeking treatment and fresh air, and anyone who wants a convenient base for exploring the whole coast.

Practical tips

  • Come by train as far as Constanța, then a short transfer brings you into the resort.
  • June and September offer good weather and gentler prices.
  • Book your accommodation early if you want a villa in the Belona area.
  • Don't miss a bathe in Techirghiol, then alternate with the sea — the classic ritual of the coast.

Eforie Sud will never appear on posters advertising wild parties, and that is exactly what makes it special. It's the resort you return to year after year because, quite simply, you feel good there.
