GuideThe coast on a tight budget — cheap accommodation, free beaches, eating on the cheap
The sea costs nothing. That's the good news you can hold on to when planning a coastal holiday without emptying your wallet. The beaches are public, the sun is free, and the difference between an expensive holiday and a cheap one lies almost entirely in how you choose your accommodation, your food and your timing. It can be done beautifully on little money — here's how.
When you go matters most
Prices on the coast aren't fixed; they rise and fall with the season. You catch the best deals in the shoulder season: the first half of June and the second half of September. The sea is still good, the resorts are emptier, and accommodation can be 30–50% cheaper than at the peak of July and August. If you can avoid weekends, all the better.
Where to sleep cheaply
- Costinești — the classic destination for young people and thin wallets, full of modest lodgings.
- Eforie Nord and Eforie Sud — private hosts and guesthouses at reasonable prices, close to the beach.
- Saturn and Venus — resorts near Mangalia with plenty of affordable accommodation blocks.
- 2 Mai and Vama Veche — camping and rooms with locals, a free-spirited atmosphere, low costs.
Searching for "private accommodation" remains the budget's best friend. As a rough guide, a modest room in the shoulder season can start from around 100–150 lei a night. Look for lodgings a few streets back from the sea — the price difference is big, the walk is short.
Free beaches with no hassle
In Romania, the beach is public domain — you don't pay to sit on the sand. You only pay if you want a sunbed and umbrella. The economical solution: bring your own blanket, umbrella and tent and grab a spot in the morning. Free beach areas are generous at Corbu, Vadu, in the north of Mamaia and around 2 Mai.
Eating cheaply, but well
The terraces along the promenade are a budget trap. A few tricks:
- Cook or prepare your own food if your accommodation has a kitchen.
- Look for eateries towards the interior of the resort, not those on the seafront.
- Fish dishes are cheaper at the small local restaurants in Mangalia, 2 Mai or Constanța than on the tourist promenade.
- Local markets offer fruit and vegetables at fair prices.
Fun that costs nothing
The Constanța promenade, with the Cazinoul and Portul Tomis, is a superb free walk. At Eforie, techirghiol-techirghiol" class="lo-autolink">Lacul Techirghiol offers mud and salt water with no ticket in the free-shore areas. The sunsets at Vama Veche cost nothing and remain among the most beautiful on the coast.
And if you want a single "bigger-budget" outing, choose something that's worth it: the Delfinariul Constanța or Cetatea Histria for a day that's completely different. The rest — the sea, the sun, the sand — the coast gives you for free, year after year.
