GuideThe Romanian Seaside Off-Season (September–October 2026): Warm Sea, Quiet, Low Prices
Why we love the off-season
September is, for many in the know, the most beautiful month on the coast. The sea stays warm — water cools far more slowly than air, so after a whole summer of heating up, September often gives you 21-23 degrees Celsius, as good as July. The difference is that the peak crowds are gone, the beaches empty out, and prices start dropping visibly.
October is moodier: the first weeks can be surprisingly mild, but the weather turns unpredictable and the sea cools. It's a month for walks, treatments and quiet, less for swimming. Another autumn bonus is the traffic: the roads to the coast empty out, and a weekend escape becomes far more relaxed than in peak season.
What works best in autumn
- Swimming in September — in Mamaia, Eforie or the south, the water is still good, especially in the first half of the month.
- Balneal treatments — Eforie Nord and Techirghiol are the off-season stars: mud, procedures and health stays, right when it's quiet and pleasantly cool.
- Long walks and photography — empty seafronts, warm autumn light and a calm sea make the resorts gorgeous.
- A city break in Constanța — the city is alive all year, a perfect base when the beach is no longer the priority.
- Fresh seafood and quiet dinners — with fewer tourists, the good restaurants that stay open feel calmer, and a long dinner on a near-empty terrace is one of the season's quiet pleasures.
What's open and what closes
Here honesty is needed. The off-season also means part of the coast retreats:
- Open all year — Mamaia (partly), Constanța, Eforie Nord and Techirghiol, thanks to their balneal and urban base.
- Thin out quickly — the small southern resorts (Jupiter, Venus, Saturn), Costinești and the bohemian villages like Vama Veche and 2 Mai sharply reduce activity after mid-September: many terraces, clubs and restaurants close.
In other words: for swimming plus full services, choose September and the larger resorts. For total quiet and treatment, go in October too, but check ahead what's open at your chosen stay.
Who it suits
- Couples and anyone fleeing the crowds.
- Seniors and anyone coming for balneal treatment.
- Those on a tighter budget catching end-of-season prices.
- Lovers of walks, photography and long meals on quiet terraces.
Bottom line
The off-season rewards those who know how to choose: in September you get a warm sea without the crowds, and in October full calm and low prices. The key is to confirm what stays open before you leave.
