GuideThe Best Family-Friendly Beaches on the Romanian Coast
With a small child, you no longer choose a beach by how fashionable it is, but by very concrete things: how gently the water slopes in, how close the nearest toilet is, whether you have room to wheel a stroller, and whether you can find shade at midday. The good news is that the Romanian coast, from north to south, has beaches that seem designed with the little ones in mind — you just need to know which ones.
What makes a good beach for children
A family-friendly beach has:
- A gentle slope into the water, staying shallow over a good stretch — so children can play safely.
- Fine sand rather than pebbles, pleasant to walk on barefoot and perfect for sandcastles.
- Calm water, sheltered from strong waves and currents.
- Facilities nearby: showers, toilets, terraces, ideally a playground.
The north: space and sand to spare
Mamaia remains the classic family choice, and rightly so. The sand is fine, the beach is wide, the water deepens gradually, and alongside the sea you have Aqua Magic Mamaia and the Mamaia Cable Car (Telegondola) for days when the children want something other than waves. It gets crowded at the height of the season, but it is well equipped.
Further north, Mamaia Nord, Năvodari and Corbu offer wider, more open beaches. Corbu is wild and spectacular, but with few facilities — suited to families who want quiet and come prepared.
The centre: Eforie and the gentle waters of Techirghiol
Eforie Nord has broad beaches with fine sand and easy access, plus a resort behind it that has everything you need. Very close by, Lake Techirghiol (Lacul Techirghiol) offers a bonus few people know about: therapeutic mud and salt water in which you float effortlessly.
Eforie Sud is more settled and quieter, ideal for families escaping the bustle. Tuzla and Costinești round out the area — though Costinești has a younger, livelier vibe.
The south: garden resorts made for families
This is where the small, green resorts near Mangalia shine. Olimp, Neptun, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn have fine-sand beaches, calm waters and plenty of greenery for shade — a golden detail when you have children. Saturn and Venus are perhaps the most relaxed for families: close to Mangalia, without the buzz of the north.
At the southern tip, 2 Mai and Vama Veche are lovely, but more for their free-spirited atmosphere than for the comfort of families with babies.
The beach kit for children
Whatever resort you choose, a few things will save your day:
- A tent or umbrella with UV protection — a rented parasol isn't always enough.
- Sunscreen for children and a swim shirt with sleeves.
- Your own water and snacks, to avoid frequent trips back and forth.
- Go early in the morning or after 4 p.m. — the midday sun is harsh on young skin.
As a rough guide, an umbrella with two loungers costs around 50–80 lei a day in the larger resorts. Choose your spot according to your child's age: for a baby, the quiet south; for an energetic child, Mamaia with its water park; for a teenager, anywhere that also has something to do in the evening.
