GuideCruises, Boat Trips and Dolphins on the Coast
There are few things that captivate a child — or an adult who has forgotten how to marvel — quite like a first trip out to sea by boat. The air tastes different, the town shrinks behind you, and beyond the breakwater a line of horizon opens up that seems never to end. On the Romanian coast, constanta" class="lo-autolink">Portul Tomis in Constanța is the heart of these trips, the place from which most pleasure craft set off.
Where you depart from and what to choose
Portul Tomis lies right next to the Constanța Casino (Cazinoul din Constanța), in the peninsula area, easy to reach on foot from the old town. Here you'll find everything from small, fast boats to catamarans and larger cruise boats with a deck and an on-board bar. The offerings fall, broadly, into three types:
- The short coastal trip (30–45 minutes) — you see the town from the sea, the Casino, the promenade, the beaches of Constanța.
- The hour-long (or longer) cruise — it heads further out, sometimes as far as Mamaia.
- Special outings — sunset trips, themed cruises, or longer runs to the north.
Prices vary a lot with the season and the duration. As a rough guide, a short trip starts at around 40–60 lei per person, while longer cruises climb towards 100–150 lei. Small children usually get a discount or go free.
Dolphins — a matter of luck and patience
Many set out to sea hoping to see dolphins, and the Black Sea does have dolphin populations (mainly bottlenose and common dolphins). But it has to be said honestly: there is no guarantee. Dolphins are wild animals; they appear when and where they please, most often early in the morning and on a calm sea.
If you want to boost your chances: choose the morning outings, head further out, and ask the crew where they've been spotted recently. And if you want to be sure you'll see dolphins, the answer is on dry land: the Constanța Dolphinarium (Delfinariul Constanța), part of the complex that also includes the Constanța Aquarium (Acvariul Constanța). There the show is scheduled, and children stay enchanted whatever the state of the sea.
Practical tips for a successful outing
The sea looks gentle from the shore, but on deck the wind and sun hit differently:
- Generous sun protection and a hat — the reflection off the water burns fast.
- A light jacket, even in summer; it's cooler out on the water.
- If you're prone to motion sickness, take a tablet an hour beforehand and fix your gaze on the horizon.
- Check the wind forecast — in heavy seas many trips are cancelled, and that's for your own good.
For little ones, a 30–45 minute outing is ideal; long cruises can tire them out. Always ask whether there are children's life jackets on board.
What else you can combine in the area
The beauty of Portul Tomis is that everything is close by. After your trip, the Constanța promenade takes you past the Casino, the city's emblem, all the way to the Constanța Dolphinarium and the Constanța Aquarium. A whole day comes together naturally: the sea in the morning, a fish lunch at one of the harbour terraces, a museum or the aquarium in the afternoon.
And if you catch the taste for the sea, the sunset cruises remain perhaps the loveliest option — when the sun sinks over the Black Sea (Marea Neagră) and the town lights up behind you. It's the kind of memory that lingers long after the sand has been shaken out of the luggage.
