GuideHow to Reach the Coast from Bucharest, Cluj and Iași — 2026 Transport Guide
The journey to the sea is part of the holiday — and how you plan it can decide whether you arrive rested or exhausted. From Bucharest, Cluj or Iași, the Romanian coast is reachable in several ways: by car on the motorway, by train, by coach, or even by plane to Mihail Kogălniceanu Airport. Each has clear advantages, depending on your budget, your time and how much luggage you carry. Here's how to reach Constanța, Mamaia and the other resorts most efficiently.
From Bucharest — the closest
Bucharest is the natural gateway to the coast, some 220–250 km from Constanța.
- By car on the A2 (the "Sun Motorway", Autostrada Soarelui) — the most popular option. The drive takes around 2.5–3 hours in normal conditions. On Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings, the A2 gets seriously congested towards the sea, and on Sunday evenings on the way back. Set off early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the jams around Fetești–Cernavodă.
- By train — InterCity and fast trains connect Bucharest's Gara de Nord with Constanța in roughly 2.5–3 hours. Comfortable, without the stress of traffic, and from Constanța you have a bus or taxi to Mamaia and the southern resorts.
- By coach — many private operators run daily services. It's the budget option, with times similar to the train.
From Cluj-Napoca — a long haul, plan well
From Cluj the distance is considerable (over 600 km), so planning matters.
- By car — the drive takes 8–10 hours, crossing Transylvania and Muntenia until you reach the A2. It's tiring in a single day; many prefer a stop along the way.
- By plane — the fastest option. There are flights to Mihail Kogălniceanu Airport (Constanța), and the flight cuts the journey dramatically. From the airport you reach the resorts by taxi or transfer.
- By train — there are seasonal direct connections to the coast, but they take a long time (over 12 hours). Good for anyone who wants to sleep on the train and save a night's accommodation.
From Iași — mixed options
From Iași, too, the distance is large (around 400–450 km).
- By car — roughly 6–7 hours, via Bârlad and Brăila into Dobrogea.
- By train or coach — there are direct seasonal services to Constanța at the height of summer; check the schedule in advance, as frequency drops outside the summer.
- By plane — there are sometimes seasonal flights to Kogălniceanu; otherwise, the option with a connection via Bucharest remains available.
The plane — for those coming from afar
Mihail Kogălniceanu International Airport lies about 25 km from Constanța and is the coast's air gateway. In the summer season, the frequency of domestic flights increases, and from Cluj or other big cities you arrive in under two hours of flying, versus 8–10 hours by car. It's the ideal option if you want to save a whole day of travel and start your holiday rested. The only downside: you have to add the transfer from the airport to the resort.
Getting around the coast
- The coastal train connects the southern resorts (Eforie, Neptun, Mangalia) with Constanța in summer.
- Buses and minibuses run frequently between Constanța, Mamaia and Eforie Nord.
- Your own car is useful for exploring Vama Veche, 2 Mai or Corbu, but parking in Mamaia is difficult in summer.
- A bike or scooter works excellently on the promenades of Mamaia and Constanța.
Practical tips
- Avoid peak traffic on the A2 — towards the sea on Fridays, towards home on Sundays.
- Book train and plane tickets early in season, especially from Cluj and Iași.
- Fill up on fuel — do it before the A2, as the motorway service stations can have queues.
- Check the airport transfer if you fly — the distance to the resorts is not negligible.
Whatever your city of departure, there's a suitable option. The key is to avoid the crowds, book in advance and save your energy for what truly matters: the sea.
